Every three years European Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry takes place in different European city. This year Kyiv, Ukraine got a chance to host the 18th European Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry. Today, after the 18th ESFC has just been finished, it is time to recall how it was.
The 18th European Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry (ESFC) just has finished in Kyiv, Ukraine. During 6-day meeting from August 7 till 12 one hundred thirty-five delegates from 21 countries had an opportunity to present their latest research in the different fields of fluorine chemistry.
The 18th ESFC was organized by Chemspace, Enamine, Institute of Organic Chemistry NASU and Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry NASU – companies and institutes deeply engaged into chemical science.
Choosing Kyiv as a place to hold the Symposium, organizers gave the visitors a chance to be charmed by authentic atmosphere of this ancient city that has maintained its historic sights for modern life.
August 7th – After registration all delegates were invited to a cordial Welcome Party. It was a great opportunity to meet old friends, refresh contacts and start new networks whilst enjoying delicious food and the sound of authentic Ukrainian instrument called "bandura" used for performance of world-known musical compositions.
August 8th –Opening Ceremony allowed everyone to enjoy thrilling performances of Ukrainian artists. Famous Ukrainian singer with true Ukrainian melodic voice, incendiary national dance – hopak - they made the Ceremony both solemn and cheerful.
Following the Opening Ceremony there were lectures of keynote speakers that marked the true scientific beginning of the Symposium. Delegates were able to see presentations of such famous in the chemistry world scientists as Vladimir Grushin, K&G Technologies, USA, Beate Koksch, Freie Universitӓt, Germany, David O’Hagan, University of St Andrews, UK
August 9th – Young as well as matured delegates had a possibility to present their latest works on Poster session, which was held in a relaxed atmosphere and was accompanied by food and drinks.
August 11th -After many fruitful discussions during lectures days all delegates and accompanying persons were invited to an unforgettable Farewell Party, which took place in one of Kyiv most atmospheric contemporary places – ArtDock – unique building with a panoramic view, placed on the Dnipro river bank. Guests were entertained by a breathtaking fire show and enjoyed Ukrainian cuisine and wine.
During the Symposium there also was a special program for accompanying persons. At special master classes everyone was keen on Decorating eggs (pysanka) and Petrykivka painting.
All attendees have also a possibility to visit different excursions including the Kyiv Sightseeing tour, the excursion to Enamine - one of Ukraine's most successful chemical companies and excursion to Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
It is fair to conclude that the Symposium was a great success! So many people have contributed in so many ways to turn this event into a smoothly running meeting with esteemed speakers, many interesting presentations and posters and a very warm atmosphere for discussion and networking. A lot of scientists, a lot of smiling faces, and perfection even in the smallest details made this Symposium a memorable event for everyone.
