COX enzymes play an essential role in our body. There are 2 types of enzymes: COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 is produced in the body regularly and is responsible for platelet aggregation, helping facilitate blood flow in the kidneys and protecting the stomach lining. COX-2 can be produced by our body in higher amounts only under certain conditions. COX-2 generally shows up in areas of the body where inflammation is occurring. Overall, COX is clinically important because they are inhibited by aspirin and numerous other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This inhibition of COX confers relief from inflammatory, pyretic, thrombotic, neurodegenerative, and oncological maladies.
