STING plays a crucial role in the human innate immune system. Activated STING induces the production of type I interferons (IFNs) and proinflammatory cytokines through the STING-TBK1-IRF3/NF-κB pathway, which could be applied to the treatment of infection, inflammation, and tumorigenesis.   

Therapeutic targeting of the cGAS-STING pathway could offer new ways to treat inflammatory and autoimmune diseases because it is considered the key mediator of inflammation in the settings of infection, cellular stress, and tissue damage.
